Retro Side Font Review

It was a quiet Tuesday morning, and I was staring at a blank brand board for a new boutique coffee shop. The client wanted something that felt nostalgic but fresh, with a personality that could stand out in a crowded market. I opened my font library and scrolled through dozens of options—until I landed on Retro Side. Its retro handwritten style immediately caught my eye, and I knew it had the potential to bring the right vibe to the project.

Retro Side for Logo Design and Brand Identity

Retro Side is a retro handwritten display font that brings a unique blend of cool and playful energy to any logo or brand identity. When I first tested it on a logo concept, I was struck by how effortlessly it balanced whimsy with clarity. The slight irregularity in the letterforms gave it a handcrafted feel, while the overall structure remained legible even at smaller sizes.

For this coffee shop project, I paired Retro Side with a clean sans serif for the tagline. The contrast worked well, allowing the logo to be both eye-catching and professional. It’s clear that Retro Side isn’t just a novelty font—it’s a versatile tool for creating memorable brand identities that feel authentic and approachable.

Retro Side for Packaging Design and Product Labels

Once the logo was set, I moved on to packaging mockups. I used Retro Side for the product labels, and it really shone in that context. The font’s organic flow made it feel like it was meant to be printed on paper, which was perfect for a small-batch coffee brand looking to emphasize craftsmanship.

I also tested it on a coffee bag design, where it stood out as a strong headline. The font’s character didn’t get lost in the background, and it added a touch of personality without overwhelming the rest of the design. However, I noticed that when used in larger blocks of text, the subtle variations in the letterforms could make it less readable. That’s why I recommend using Retro Side as a display font rather than a body font.

Retro Side for Social Media Graphics and Web Headers

When it came to social media posts, Retro Side proved to be a game-changer. I used it for a promotional post for the coffee shop’s launch, and it added an instant sense of fun and nostalgia. The font’s bold strokes made it stand out on Instagram and Facebook, where visual impact is key.

On the website header, I found that Retro Side worked best when used sparingly. I kept it to a single line of text, paired with a simple background, and it created a strong visual hierarchy. It’s a great choice for headlines, banners, and other digital assets where a little flair can go a long way.

Retro Side for Business Cards and Stationery

Business cards are often overlooked, but they’re a crucial part of a brand’s identity. I designed a few samples using Retro Side and was impressed by how well it translated to print. The font’s texture gave the cards a tactile quality that felt more personal than a standard typeface.

For stationery, I used it on a set of notepads and envelopes. The font’s casual yet polished look made it feel like it belonged in a creative studio or artisan shop. It’s a solid choice for anyone looking to add a touch of retro charm to their printed materials.

Retro Side for Wedding Invitations and Elegant Branding

Wedding invitations require a balance of elegance and personality, and Retro Side managed to hit that sweet spot. I tested it on a sample invitation for a vintage-themed wedding, and it complemented the overall aesthetic perfectly. The font’s soft curves and playful strokes gave it a warm, inviting feel that matched the event’s tone.

While it’s not the most formal font, Retro Side can still work in elegant branding if used thoughtfully. Pairing it with a serif font for the details helped maintain a sense of sophistication, proving that it’s more versatile than it might initially appear.

As a designer, I always recommend testing fonts in real-world scenarios before committing to them. Retro Side is no exception. Try it on different surfaces, in various sizes, and with different color schemes to see how it performs. It’s a premium font that delivers on its promise of being both stylish and functional.

When working with clients, I also remind them to check commercial font licensing. Retro Side is a display font, so it’s important to ensure it’s suitable for all intended uses, whether it’s for a website, print, or merchandise.
